The Center of Excellence on Cancers of the Skin will use access to the largest dermatology department in the United States and one of the most extensive patient and tissue databases to find new ways to fight skin cancer.

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, with more than one million new cases diagnosed annually. NYU scientists are on the cutting edge of research, with achievements that include devising the “ABCDE” guidelines for quick identification of melanomas. The researchers at this Center will offer patients unprecedented levels of scientific attention tailored to very specific conditions such as specialized clinics for organ transplant patients with skin cancer or patients with Merkel Cell carcinoma, as well as unique therapeutic protocols developed at the NYU Medical Center.

This Center will also enroll patients in tissue databases and study those tissues in the lab to evaluate whether, for example, drugs already approved to treat other conditions can be offered as new treatments for specific subsets of skin cancer, and on a faster timetable than therapies designed from scratch.
